The lights are going out all over the islands, as part of the Budget cuts.
Other than the various 'hoods in Stornoway (and Parkend) you'll need your torches if you go out late at night.

They've been switching off all the streetlights in Point from 11pm or so for as long as I can remember.

ReplyDeleteIn Winter, in mawland this will mean the street lights will come on at 9am and go off again at 4pm.
"The Country" now officially start at Olivers Brae and Labost.

After all the tribulations with street lights, gugas, rioting and deaths in our cities, we should be grateful that Kevin Macneil's marriage can still go ahead. Publicity seeking eejits!!

ReplyDeleteThose of us who are chronologically challenged will remember the days when street lights were only for the cosmopolitan softies of Steornabhagh.
ReplyDeleteUs hardy souls in the rest of eileandom had to make do with torches. Back in the day, behind every house door as a strategically placed flashlight, alongside the ubiquitous pair of wellies.
Aaaaaah. Halcyon days, halcyon days.
Maybe it's doing away with hardiness that torches gave us is just kind of thing that has broken all our social structures to the extent that the 'yoof darn sarf' have been complaining about 'a lack of opportunity, innit'. Or is that a link too far?
The Labour Party allowed this financial mess to happen and we pay the price. They just want to keep us in the dark.
