Rev Martin, Rev Campbell, Rev Coghill?
It is obscene that religious extremists, unelected by residents and taxpayers, can excert such influence on policy here. Especially in tight vote situations such as these. Because someone wears a dog collar and professes to believe in a particular type of ghost, they get to decide crucial local matters such as which school stays open and which closes?
What other part of the modern world lets itself be run by a splinter group of extremists and fundamentalists? 21st century? Don't make me laugh; it's a sick, pathetic, backwards, embarassing and unfunny joke.
If this is how major policy is decided, perhaps the Western Isles and the residents who live on them do not deserve to prosper after all.
Am I to guess your not Free Church
12.49?
how many of the against mob voted to keep Bayble open. Not the "BBC I am only ther for the money Maciver" or the Vice Chair. No backbone to vote with their brain.
John McCririck at 12.49 I heard you debating with Rev Hargreaves on Radio 2 on Monday with all your bigotry
3.17, it doesn't take a bigot to recognise that for the unelected to hold what could be a deciding vote on important matters (actually any matters) and for there not to be a deafening outcry against it is indeed shockingly, disgracefully, shamefully backwards.
I agree, we don't deserve to prosper, if we think this is acceptable in the 21st century.
'What other part of the modern world lets itself be run by a splinter group of extremists and fundamentalists?' 12:49.
The UK does - The House of Lords.
anon 12.49
Couldn't agree more - I knew that Coghill (that rational voice of reason!) was involved, but I didn't know he had another two of his cult bretheren with him. This is ridiculous.
well said 8:52
Can someone enlighten me - besides the education committee and (I think?) the licencing committee, is there anything else the churches have a vote on?
Only Councillors sit on the Licencing Board, but they have a statutory right to be consulted on licencing applications.
As far as I know, they influence no committees other than Education & Children's Services.

Brainwash them whilst they're young.
thanks Angus
So who sits on the children and education committee to represent the minorities? Muslims, Jews, Catholics, Atheists (strike me down with thunder) or do they have to rely on their elected to do what is right for them?
As a catholic and an atheist (guilty but defiant), I'll say now that I waive any right I might be getting to be represented by any unelected person whatsoever.
Tip of the week folks.
Move to Lionel. ;-)
Anon 10.10 PM. Can you tell us how you can be both a catholic and an atheist.
so, anon 12.49 only the relegious people can be extremists - try saying that in the soviet union, with a straight face! anon 2:50 Oh, yes of course they are going to be brainwashed by a school board - then they go home and watch children's programmes (I have yet to see a christian portrayed fairly on any - as for evangilisation don't make me laugh - and finally are any of you anons (mind you) brave enough to say similar things about Muslim or even hindi teachers?
11.53 - I don't see any Muslim or Hindi people deciding on the future of local schools merely because they are Muslim or Hindi. Do you?
Fortunately for you, no, not in this country - otherwise you might have to make good on that. i am to understand that as a promise....?
