Want to buy a slightly used Harris Tweed Mill?

Today's post brings an invitation to consider the purchase of the Harris Tweed Mills currently/formerly occupied by Haggas at Sandwick Road.

Approx 1 acre is being offered by the agents comprising the main office block
the works
and the open space behind the works, leaving only the area accessed from Cabarfeidh Road as part of the operation. Or what used to pass as a business.

According to the blurb I received, prospective buyers should be aware that redevelopment of the site will not be approved by the Council [it is too close to the Gas tanks] and that there is no central heating in any of the 30,000 sq ft of accommodation.

Hurry, hurry, before these buildings get snapped up.

Good site for a turbine. Snap it up.

I saw these the other day in downtown pie scoffing Dundee. Fab. Just where they should be. In an industrial area and powering a local facility, that's the Michelen tyre factory in this instance. Now that is green energy.

They tower over Sainsbury's car park! No noise pollution and the Dundee gadgies love to watch it as they neck their buckie and drip grease from their pies.

Why have we not heard of these before? How about another on Goat Island and another on the pier, and another three on the (former - info to come - read on) site of Arnish? A third - in the Comhairle car park perhaps ;-))

Cal Mac gossip says that the Galson Trust turbine scheme has hit the rocks. They will need to rebuild six island bridges, including the protected Laxdale log jam, to get their turbines to site now that AMEC are off the scene. They had banked on using AMECs new road system by-passing town. That is no longer an option. They would also need to pay to strengthen the road from Arnish to Barvas. Told that lot will cost them £4million. Or would they pay out their own pockets? Is that why the Comhairle are shutting the schools to pay for this plan? That is one story I am hearing.

Also turbines would be imported to Arnish, not made there, as they are looking at buying second hand eastern European machines. Traban anyone? You couldn't make it up if you tried.

Gosh. Amazing what a few days on the mainland does to open yir eyes to the dodgy deals that go on here. Still. Home sweet home. Would you have it any other way?

i'd put in a bid for a pound on line... but i might win them!

surely the developer would have to pay for any work to roads etc and not the taxpayer.

Angus, you were on the planning board - what is the situation here? Can any of that be true?

Could they not off load them by barge on the westside?

Get a helicopter and drop 'em in like darts

PS: where can you buy those Tweed Nike's? on the island?

The LA may choose to improve the roads if they thought the pay back was worth it. Conversely they could do what ~Shetland did when BP were building Sullom Voe and get them to pay for it. It all depends on the relationship between the two parties and which option is the "best".

The only problem with off loading on the westside would be the lack or otherwise of a suitable harbour.
Thed road from the harbour to where they were going would also need upgrading. Where would they use? Ness? It dries out. There is also the issue that the westside is predominently the weather side of the islands and that could have an effect on loading and unloading etc.

this would be an ideal replacement for the nicolson, or even as an annex - no need for such expensive refurbishment, just put the kids in there!!

yea, they could warp, weave and wash tweed all day - take the basic cost down, the ones that dont show any talent could turn the "mill windmill" (patent pending) when there is no wind! i would give them Sunday off- well morning- well 11am to 12 am - anyway now no need for ANY schools- yet another saving ;-)

it's probably in better condition than the Nic anyway.

Maybe Trump could buy it to make more rugs for his head. He must have used the special strength glue today for his landing in Stornoway.

Tweed rug hairdos could be the next big thing in the Big Apple

Echo Anon 4.37PM. The gas and fuel tanks should be on their way to Arnish, but do we have to wait for another Bunsfield?

So, Haggas is making haggis out of the Harris Tweed industry. Showing his true colours, all five of them. I sincerely hope the guys in Carloway and Shawbost put in a bid to take it over and make a go of it.

It's difficult to comprehend how quickly one person has managed to screw up a business he's bought. Not surprised his name has been (only slightly) misquoted as "Lyin' Haggis".

Why is he spending £1m on making a film about Harris Tweed??

What is the film called Death of Harris Tweed.
