Power struggle at Council...

...according to a report on Hebrides News.

Apologies to my former colleagues, but at the moment I think most of the public would like to see them struggling with 240 volts through their seat, rather than some self-absorbed battle over whether power is vested in the Convener or a new post of Council Leader.

If you think that the current Convener has done a poor job, then get rid of him by standing up to be counted, and expressing in simple phrases that you cannot continue to give him his support.

Don't think that you can solve the problems by creating a new expense account to match the title and hence giving the Councillors the opportunity to avoid difficult decisions.

Avoiding difficult decisions is the root cause of this problem, and too many Councillors will always avoid saying or doing anything 'difficult', preferring to make vague and empty statements for the benefit of their constituents.

Find your backbones and make it clear - back the Convener or sack him. These are your options; anything else just makes it worse.

I swore I'd never say it, but it wasn't like this in my day

Right on the button Angus. If they haven't got the guts to get rid of that useless article none of them deserve to be allowed to stay on as elected members. They have become a joke, a laughing stock, running hither and tither in response to local pressure groups instead of concentrating on doing what is best for the Western Isles.

Flossie the Führer in the meantime cannot see any possible threat to his position. He can't be bothered looking, just like he can't be bothered turning up anywhere on time. For God's sake get rid of him for good. Don't waste more money on sidelining him; he'll be happy as Larry doing nothing at all.

It seems to me that a Council Leader and a Civic Head are both needed at CNES. Granted having a Council Leader trying to coral so many 'Independents' might be a bit like herding cats, but there should be a distinct role for a Council leader in addition to the Convener's post, as is the case with all mainland councils. The main problem seems to me to be that there are too many 'Independents'. If there were more Members of their respective poltical groups, and less Independents, more of the councillors would get political direction, given that very few of them seem to have a mind of their own at the moment.

Gutless; absolutely gutless. Once again our craven councillors have chosen the worst option.

How can this nonsense be justified when, due to their pathetic decision on school closures and the resulting squeeze on other services, we're likely to be driving from pothole to pothole for the next five years.

They should all stand down now.
