Broadband - how it can be done

Faroe islandsWho are Shetland Islands Council turning to to find out how to deliver broadband in their islands?
A delegation from the isles is being invited to Faroe to see how the community there is able to provide almost its entire population with high speed broadband as the SIC considers how to go about setting up its own telecommunications firm.[...]
Mr Cluness said: “The Faroese are specialists on broadband – almost 100 per cent of the population is fairly high speed. A lack of decent broadband is one of the main things that’s holding us back.”
Having been to the Faroes and seen the topography and the weather, the challenges in Uist pale into insignificance.

As a frustrated Hebrides net user I am only too aware of what a half baked council, a half wit highland and islands enterprise, and a robbing set of bastards like Scotnet are capable of.

Just in:

Dear Hebrides.net client.

Hebrides.Net is pleased to announce a major change to our current services.

We will soon be doubling the monthly data transfer limits allowing customers to fully enjoy the benefits of the wide variety of online applications available. Although these changes will not take effect immediately, in the short term, any clients who exceeds their current transfer limit will be able to extend the limit by buying a further 1Gb of allowance, however you will not be charged for this request.

For example, if you currently use the Home500 service and have a 5Gb monthly limit, your new limit will be 10Gb although initially, you will have to visit the Hebrides.net website and apply for an extension if you exceed your current allowance. You can continue to purchase additional capacity at no cost until your new limit has been reached. This change is effective immediately.

We can also announce that we will be shortly trialling a range of new services including faster residential and business offerings. Hebrides.Net will provide further details of this exciting development via future newsletters and e-news bulletins.

Monthly transfer limits and the size of files can be a confusing subject. As a guide, the following table gives an idea of how much of your allowance you will use through different file downloads:

File type Approximate size

Text only e-mail (send or receive) 4kb - 20kb

Digital image (depending on resolution) 500kb - 8Mb

MP3 (music track) 3Mb - 5Mb

Television program (typical 30 minute program)* 250Mb - 350Mb

Movie (dependant on length) 3Gb - 5Gb

* Please note that watching a television program online uses the same amount of allowance as downloading it to your hard drive.

1Gb = 1024Mb
1Mb = 1024Kb

Therefore, a 10Gb monthly limit would allow you to download approximately 2500 songs or watch 15 hours of BBC Iplayer.

We provide a full tracking facility for monthly transfer allowance. To use this service, please visit www.hebrides.net and click on the 'My Account' page. To use this service, you need to know your SOP number, account reference and shared secret. If you do not know this information, please call the helpdesk on 0845 838 9010.

If you have any questions relating to these changes, please e-mail support@hebrides.net

Kind Regards,

The Hebrides.net team

So that's all right then.
