Who's going to tell the dawn patrol.....

Stornoway public drinking ban

12/08/2010

Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill has given The Comhairle Nan Eilean Sair (sic) permission to introduce a new ban on the public consumption of alcohol in Stornoway. The measures come into force on September 6, 2010.

Mr MacAskill said:

"Public drinking is often a nuisance and can greatly hamper the quality of life for residents in a particular area. Thirty one local authorities already have such byelaws in force and that demonstrates how seriously local authorities are tackling the problem of reducing the nuisance and disorder commonly associated with public drinking.

"I will continue to support other councils that come forward with similar byelaw proposals."

What's the Big Deal?
There has been a ban of the consumption of alcohol in public places in Stornoway for years and this is quite clearly a renewal of the bye law.
Your comments re. "Dawn Patrol" are both patronising and demeaning

11:01, how sanctimonious are you!!?? Wake up and smell the coffee. There may well be a "ban of the consumption of alcohol in public places in Stornoway for years" but unless you have been walking around with your eyes shut, no-one has taken a blind bit of notice including the police. There are drunks on our streets from the crack of dawn until the crack of dawn the next day. It is one of the many things that makes this town dirty and uninviting....
Hey but what's the big deal?.... Now who's patronising and demeaning?

There is a massive difference between been drunk in the streets of Stornoway and drinking in the streets of Stornoway.... imagine trying to ban the former….

The dawn patrol need to drink and will always find a way to do so, addiction is the word. I think the original ban was intended to curtail people wandering about with massive carry outs after the pubs have closed and the associated carnage that that habit caused. Very successful in that respect!

If this is just a continuation of that ban then we are reaching Sky News levels of a non event been sensationalised

One must be extremely carefull how things are written as interpretation is all. While no-one wants to see a group of jakeys "Drinking in the streets" the Scottish Goverment used to want Scotland to have a Cafe culture as per vitually every other European country where it is the norm to enjoy a beer or glass of wine on nicely furnitured pavements. CnES in their infinate wisdom several years ago introduced their bye-law and in one swoop killed the atmosphere of the Carnival, The Mod, Christmas, New Year and the Celtic Festival - This now apparently has been validated by the Government. Pretty soon responsible adults will have to wear hard hats before venturing into the street.....

I carry and consume my carry out under my burka, myself. Always have, always will. There have to be some advantages to being female in Stornoway.

You can also get funky little backpacks with a tube that reaches the mouth - used by endurance athletes, but just a good for drunken strolling as long as you wash it out well.

I always consume my carry out under my burka going down the narrows. I on the other hand am not female!

Maybe we should all take a stroll round the golf course of a Sunday, in our burkas with our tubed backpacks. If any of us fell over, it should not matter, as long as we are facing east while prone (or supine). Supine would ruin the backpack though. Oh well, back to the drawing board.

Stroll! you're onto something, the clubs could easily be stashed under the burka. Where do we buy burkas ?

Why just Stornoway?
Why not include Tarbert, Lochmaddy, Lochboisdale and Castlebay as well?

I think we could get a job lot of burkas on eBay. Failing that maybe Mr K.G. could be approached to have them adopted as the club strip.
Burka wearing people do not observe Sundays, anyway, so a lot of problems could be solved at one go. Not to mention the religious discrimination question if anyone objected. Can of worms anyone?

Don't forget to use Norries honesty box after your round to pay for the Sunday lock-in.
