Shetland Islands Council

I had a very pleasant hour this morning discussing windfarms and planning with a Councillor from Shetland (who shall remain anonymous).

Sheltand are clearly going full speed ahead for the maximum sized windfarm that they can.

Despite some local opposition, the absence of landlord problems and the ability to recycle the profits back into the Council coffers obviously makes the whole project much more attractive to the community as a whole.

The interconnector appears to be considered by them to be an easily surmountable issue, and their confidence in delivering onshore wind, and consequently wave, tidal and off-shore wind for the whole of Scotland is frightening.

Looks like they are going to scoop the jackpot.....unless we get the finger out.

It looks like it Angus. We are going to be left behind as the Shetlands start moving towards the twenty second century, we will be dragging our heels still trying to get out of the twentieth.

There would be no problem with the Western Isles following their own successful path with this, if the council for once took heed of what the people who live here have been saying for five years, would there?

How long is it going to be before they realise that without the support of the communities directly affected by industrial scale onshore 'developments', the whole thing's in danger of being a non-starter?

eyoop, without onshore wind the interconnector goes elsewhere. The wave, tidal and offshore wind will follow the interconnector -- to Shetland!

We have to take some pain, to get the huge potential gain.

Looks like your masterplan to make the Western Isles into a fiefdom of LWP isn't going too well, eh?

Of course, Shetland will soon find--around the time that new nuke plants are built, and the Pentland Firth's tidal power is utilized--that their onshore windfarm is merely a white elephant.

I guess we'll just have to work to eliminate the ROC subsidy to it in the meantime.

God, life is good....

-And what are you going to say when your grand children ask you why Lewis is so poor and all the shops closed down and why there is only one place to shop?
