An exciting election

An exciting election is not in prospect, a gloomy local political observer opined to me over a beer in his local.
"The choice is between a Free Church adherent who is a confirmed bachelor, and a Free Church elder who is a typical Lewis bachelor".
"How come", he enquired, "That 5% of the population are going to be calling the shots here after the next election?"

"When neither represents change - indeed quite they both advocate stasis - then where can I cast my vote?"
Answers on a beer mat.....

The Lib Dems are shot to pieces; deposit to be lost.

The Tories will improve on their vote. There are many quiet supporters of their 'cut everything' mantra out there, and not just the daily 'socialism is bad' hebridean news letter writer. But, 150 percent of sod all votes is still sod all votes.

Any party Tommy Sheridan is associated with is a laughing stock.

There's a lot of scope for an independent candidate to have a good run, save his or her deposit, finish a *minimum* of third, and possibly higher.

So long as they have a sensible manifesto, prioritise local issues accordingly, and don't show any bias towards Lewis, or the Uists, or Harris, against the other islands.

The ten local issues, in order of importance, are:

1. Jobs

2. Jobs

3. Jobs

4. Jobs

5. Jobs

6. Jobs

7. Transparency of local political process

8. Local schools

9. Transport infrastructure

10. Price of petrol

What exactly is the difference between a 'confirmed bachelor' and a 'typical Lewis bachelor'?

6:38 My thoughts exactly. It would be helpful, for us non-Lewis people, if someone could indicate where 'confirmed bachelor' and a 'typical Lewis bachelor' fit in on this particular chart.

Thank you.

Locate the section for "dancing is a sin" and you'll find both candidates.

One isn't interested in women at all and the other isn't interested them that much to do anything about it.

Two misogynists; which one will get the women's vote?

5% of the population are going to be calling the shots! Eh! Can anyone explain that number?

A confirmed bachelor is a man who enjoys the company of women but doesn't want to be tied down in any way.
A typical Lewis bachelor doesn't quite understand what a woman's purpose in life is with the exception of cooking, cleaning, housework etc etc but he can pay for that without the commitment or just live in a pile of shit and doesn't have a woman to nag him...

What really irritates me is that neither of them has ever had a real job. Both have drifted through the public sector and similar organsiations, achieving little, and then working for their respective political parties.

They are exactly the sort of party-first time-servers who should never get elected anywhere. Ever.

Sadly these 2 are the best the party system can offer. The Talibun in drag. Do we have an MSP belonging to the party in power or in oposition vote SNP or Labour anything else is on the outside blowing in the wind.

Its really quite wrong to suggest that Public Sector employees don't know anything about 'real' work. Many of them do earn their crust honestly and selflessly in the interests of those they serve, not always with appreciation or due recognition either. I know little about Alasadair Allan's background, but Donald Crichton has a creditable record, not only of engaging warmly and effectively with people, but also of representing many who found themselves in need of robust advice and confidential support. His voice has often been heard where it matters and his interventions have made a positive difference for many. Has your voice been heard?

For the moment AA or DC are your only choices. A vote for AA has clearly proved to be a waste. You msy consider DC to be politically untested but I have no doubt he will represent these islands with the same selfless devotion and quiet instinctive skilfulness he has brought to every other area of his 'public' service. Oh, and BTW, he is also a time served joiner and he didn't serve his time with the Comhairle or the Health Board either!

Seconded. Very valid point.

I'd agree with that but list our options - spoilt vote? Where are the monster raving loonys when you really need them!

4.05 pm - which member of the Local Labour party are you then?!

What a perceptive reader 10.18 is! At least he/she sees that Labour and plain common sense actually go together!

But where will Donald Chrichton's
loyalty lie. Will it be the Labour party, or The Free church or the constituents that vote for him.
Politics and religion, a difficult combination in the Western Isles.

I see that the usual party activists are alive and well, personal insults are not needed or wanted at this juncture. What exactly does being a bachelor have to do with it? Would it be alright to be an Edinburgh bachelor?

Donald's complimenting socialist and Christian principles (there really should be no tension the two) will combine to uncompromisingly serve the best interests of his contituents.

@10.01

Nothing against the guy but that kind of empty rhetoric of yours serves no one. Especially when both socialism and Christianity are so often meaningless labels that the empty-headed hide behind.

And those that are swayed by any -ism or -ity, rather than policy, character, experience and ability, shouldn't really have a vote.

Stasis? Hardly. Religious candidates will only ever seek retrogression.
They will always see present-day achievements in the information age as being too liberal.
They long for the days of ignorance and scary mumbo-jumbo to bring the masses to order.
