Askernish Golf Club

Congratulations to Storas Uibhist for getting the course open, and I hope it succeeds in attracting a large new niche of tourists to Uist.

As Storas hope, this could help to push the case for a much-needed Lochboisdale-Mallaig ferry, despite the failure of our Parliamentarians to support it.

It is another tangible sign of the success of the commmunity buy-out, and I hope that there are many more to come.

(BTW: Is the Eriskay course still operational?)

Eriskay is defunked

Sollas in ok though

I thought that this course was going to teh Land court as the crofters were against it?

Eriskay ? think someone built a house on it.

Sollas Golf Course has its own website. It's a very accommodating arrangement; any "obstacles", such as a pile of dung, are just hazards unique to the course. Everyone's happy.

It is a shame that Heb News have decided to side with half a dozen crofters who are against the development of the golf course instead of noting the large turnout of local supporters of the course. This is just typical HN attempts at sensationalism. It is a known fact that the course at Askernish pre dates the crofting township and that crofters took on their crofts in the knowledge that the course had pre emptive rights.
Well done the club and keep up the good work!

So we can all ignore the planning process then?

Council planning are a joke. They can only be likened to a roadkill ferret. Stuck in one place, stink and are all over the place!

I wish Askernish Golf Club, the Islanders and all the great and generous people involved all the success in the world.

What has been achieved is a credit to all of you and the golfing world owes the people of South Uist a great deal of thanks not just for re-opening a window into our golfing past but to actually be able to play on a course more or less as laid out by Old Tom Morris.

To all concerned a great big thank you, not just for your hard work but also re-open the course in the centenary year of Old Tom's death.

From Old Tom’s great, great grandson.

The news of Askernish golf club is already being spread throughout the golfing world. I am a booking agent in Montpelier,Vermont,USA and I am looking a every web site I can find to get more info about the area. This is a great thing for tourism in your area. Some may not like throngs of pesky visitors, but it certainly helps the economy and that hopefully had a trickle down effect to everyone.
