Labour selection battle

I'm not attending the Western Isles Labour Party selection meeting on Monday night, mainly as I am not invited, not eligible to attend, and not here.

Indeed, the Facebook open invite has apparently disappeared, or perhaps become a closed invite.  Cock-up rather than consipracy, meethinks.

With at least one (or possibly all?) of the previous three candidates having withdrawn, the race is wide open, and some of the names I expected have now decided to stand.

The leading contender appears to be working hard just below the surface, ably advised by his brother, and he seems to be the favoured compromise choice between the various faction - the anyone but [fill in blank] candidate, would be a only slightly unfair observation.

In the likely two horse race - and here I mix my metaphors in the vague hope of injecting some humour into the process - we have a pantomime cow wearing a blindfold with the logo "Labour - kick me" versus a big pile of bull being lead around the course by his master.

Am I only the only one who wants both to lose in the interests of the islands?

I'm trying hard to think what you could have added to that.

No, you aren't.

Facilitate discussion?! Our seat?!

Fully paid up, card carrying, members only, I suppose. Not too many around will fall into this category. TB and GB saw to that. EM not exactly setting the heather alight. A new contender already in the wings (AJ). Poor I Gray being elbowed out of leadership. Downwards spirals of discontent - this will eventually bottom out. Damage limitation at present... and continuing. Who wants the job?

Out of interest (and only slight interest) who are the candidates?

....not invited, not eligible to attend, not here and you clearly haven't got a clue what's really going on either! It's actually a lot more exciting and much more threatening for AA than you dare to think. All will be revealed to a surprised but hugely relieved Western Isles on Tuesday morning - can't wait to read your comments!

7.19 who have you got George Galloway? Bill Clinton? Walter Smith? Can't wait for the surprise.

7:19pm
ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!!!
I won't hold my breath though eh?
Here's to Tuesday. Let's hope it's as exciting as the Westminster race was......

I believe that one of the contenders could be DC brother to the famous Torquil C from Knock Point.
Does he not work for the Health Council??

Anonymous said...

7:19 Oooooooooo, the excitement. Wadya got? Anne Widdecombe? Wagner? Gillian McKeith? Or - let's get really extreme now - Blair or Brown?

tbh - who wants to vote for a mainstream party? The Tories are turning the UK into a Neo-Con state. The LibDems cannot be trusted (promise one thing, deliver the exact opposite). Labour couldn't even run a piggy bank without getting into a financial mess, and as for the SNP ... have you ever listened to AA?

George Gok is the man for the job.

No more candiates from point, surely they have learnt that by now!

We all now live in a CONDEM...Nation.
Surprises afoot with Labour Party nomination for Western Isles on the cards? A hard hitter? Someone with form? It must be ... BRIAN (Blessed) Wilson ... Who? Brian Wilson of these parts, you know, Harris Tweed and all ... ex North Ayrshire MP/MSP. Making a come-back. Back to basics. New Labour/Old Labour/nothing-really-to-say-Labour.
Open meeting or behind-closed-doors meeting? Let's keep it secret: no policy statements, a la Nick Clegg and Tuition fees. We may actually get POWER! Then ...we'll show you how we can tax and spend money. Start by increasing Council Tax: how much? 10% ...15% ... higher, higher, higher! OK, 20%. That's only for starters.
Have a good meeting. We all await the announcement. AA is assured further increase in majority next May.

There's been an explosion and tram crash in Consternation Street...who gives a crap about the NuLabour Party selection meeting?

Whoever is selected is going to lose anyway :-)

Its Wednesday, have I missed the announcement or is it still a secret? Who won?

Gerard - next Monday 14th.

Are we to have our very own "Super Tuesday"?..... Super!

Guy's, rumour has that AA has a very pensive 'I think its all over' look at the moment. He must have heard a rumour - stay close to him, he's going to need a lot of TLC next week.

Right, thats it. Since no one will tell me who is in the running (I don't know who DC and Torquil are) I am going to have a go. I am paid up member of The Petyor Mandlestein dance troop and have given many lectures on the subject of rudimentary quasar synthesis in remote galaxies.
Thank you.

If it's someone with more talent than the local mob but less talent than Iain Gray, AA has nothing to worry about. Labour has a very serious credibility deficit on the island and as such are going to require someone of stature to oust the incumbent. The more the Labour party attack the man rather than debate the policy the more convinced the public are that the Labour party ideas machine is stuck in reverse.

Dr E, assuming you are not fibbing and aren't actually one of the candidates DC = Donald Crichton and his brother and svengali, Torquil, who edits the political pages of The Sun.

'Political pages of the Sun' may appear to be an oxymoron, but will actually be the launch pad for the local Labour campaign.

Donald's facebook page has a 'good luck with your campaign' message!

Look to your right and see Torquils blog:

Whitehall 1212

You would think they could at least get someone who lives here rather than just "with island connections"

Quote of the day is that he is an Islington Gael.

Aren't we all Islington Gaels now, daaaahling.

Just for accuracy, though no doubt the sniffy attitude to the redtops makes little difference, the person referred to works for the Record / Mirror Group, not the Sun. How dare the readers have views on today's political issues! We need to reserve that for readers of the Herald, Scotsman, Telegraph, Mail (God help us), Guardian, the cognoscenti.

AA shouldn't stand a chance but unfortunately there doesn't seem to be anyone decent to challenge him.
Fancy it Angus?

The number one policy of any candidate should be to ensure that the booze trolley is retained on all Loganair flights.

Anonymous said...

To 1.02....Less talent than Ian Gray..is that possible?

Anonymous said...

Where are the Labour Party - they are usually on here frothing at the mouth and hurling personal abuse in all directions. Are they finally getting it?

Anonymous said...

Dear 9:14

Beware the quiet man.....

Dear 10:47 ....or woman.

Anonymous said...

9.41 asks 'are they (the Labour Party) finally getting it'? In a word, yes. By next Tuesday morning when the outcome of the selection process is publicy announced AA will have discovered, if he doesn't already know, that he's been completely outsmarted by class!

12.32 Is a big boy coming to show you all how it's done?

I hear it's a 3 horse race between a sitting MSP, a well respected local Trade Union activist, and a well respected church elder.

I'm sure the Beach Boy will be sucking his thumb and crapping himself in his Tellytubbies PJ's.
