Sorry, just three vacancies in the job centre?!! Also - what are they for, out of curiosity?

According to a search at JobCentrePlus (link is to search initiation page) there are only two jobs - a bar person and a chef.

Gaza, '90 people, mostly civilians and including 26 children, had been killed since Israeli forces went in on Saturday'

At least all 200 newly unemployed will be alive tomorrow. Gaza is a real tragedy

So that's ok then is it?
Words fail me....

Mine is one of the affected families and we refuse to see this as a "zero hope" situation. It is a difficult situation which we will get through. After all there are much worse situations to be in - Gaza being one, as underlined by Anon @ 8:19. How about a little less blinkered and parochial negativity?

Bardon Aggregates are gathering their men at the Cabba as we speak to lay them all off and re-employ just a few. Midday 6th January 2009.

These are difficult times but what are our two elected gents doing to help the case of the Western Isles. We are still paying way over the odds for fuel and this has a direct impact on business and domestic costs. Any prospective new employers must be put off by this fact alone along with general transport difficulties up here (five hours to do 40 miles on the ferry). I bet fuel costs are nothing to do with complicated pricing formulas and more to do with greed and profiteering. Can Messrs Allan and McNeil deal with the real issues and start banging on some doors. There is a work force up here ready and waiting as well as some empty business (Tabost-Lochs!) and retail units (Woolies). We could ask what HIE/WIE's cunning plan might be but I suspect this will involve more dosh to be thrown at Arnish.

Wow. I am amazed as to how you came to that conclusion. Just because it's been a difficult period for a lot of firms, every meeting does not necessarily result in job losses.

Have you realised since your post that your statement was wrong?

Ignorant fool.

Why does everyone pounce on Allan & Macneil about the pay offs on the island? What are they supposed to do about it? do people not realise its happening everywhere else & nothing they can realy do about it.

Maybe they should have ordered a few wind turbines each to help arnish, then a few houses to help the construction trade & lots of fish to help lighthouse caledonia, obviously the amount of pick n mix they were getting from woolies wasnt enough to help the mega million pound debt.

Then we would have people saying they are misusing the money they get, so it seems to be a no win situation for them. People should lay off them & blame labour for the mess all over the UK instead of blaming SNP for the same thing happening in the Western Isles.

can you buy MacSween voodoo dolls?

Yes Anon 7.33 PM. Leave the Barra Bhouy to put down EDM in Parliament about sharing mobile phone masts. So that he will only have to carry one mobile." This is the crap that bothers him while hundreds of his constituents were signing on the dole. I would like to see what letters himself and the Beach Buoy sent to Jim Mather while he was welcoming the jobs from the Islands to his own neck of the woods. Perhaps they should also ask the hauliers in the Islands what debt their Norwegian friends left them with.

Come on guys, be fair. Tintin is asking questions in Holywood and getting answers (ahem).

Alasdair Allan (Western Isles) (SNP): To ask the Scottish Executive how it plans to address the economic circumstances in the Western Isles following such events as the announcement of the closure of the Lighthouse Caledonia fish processing factory on Lewis and the downturn in the Harris Tweed industry. Jim Mather: The Lighthouse Caledonia announcement is of course regrettable and, coupled with the downturn in the Harris Tweed industry, poses obvious challenges to the Western Isles economy. The Scottish Government will continue to work with local partners, both in the public and private sectors, to consider all possible options for economic recovery and sustainability in the Western Isles.

Should we laugh or cry at Mathers comments?
