Bloody vandals

I've just had a phone call from Cllr Keith Dodson to tell me that all four figures in the Bayhead playpark were vandalised last night and are beyond repair. Some of his constituents were almost in tears at the mindless destruction.Bayhead playpark
What a f'ing disgrace.

I knew that this would happen as unfortunately there are too many people on this island that don't want us to prosper from the tourism industry and don't care what our town looks like as long as the pubs stay open as long as possible. I'll put money on the individuals being a. drunk b. unemployed and c. on state benefits - what do they have to lose?

Whoever it was didn't like what they saw and also must have too much time on their hands. When they are apprehended by plod perhaps they should be made to come up with a suitable replacement funded, and constructed by themselves. Might make them appreciate what goes in to being a bit creative. Failing that...chop theit hands off.

HACK THEIR CLIPANS OFF WITH A CHISEL

What a crying shame. I think the people that did it should be made to pose in exactly the same positions, night and day, for the next 6 months.

No doubt the same type of wa-kers who destroyed the bus shelter at Brue last year

People who do things like this are the same people who would winge and say there is nothing to do and the place is a sh*thole - ironic isn't it. I hope they are caught and given a lot of community service.

Unfortunately sounds like the mainland. Anything nice that appears, unless it's durable, gets damaged quickly by neds, chavs, alcoholics or random idiots.

Hoping CCTV will have picked this up. Even better a webcam with an archive.

I am as appalled as the next man. But in all the times I have stayed in Stornoway over the last year only once have I seen a police officer out of a car. And I've not often seen police officers in cares either.

I have been told by those living in Stornoway town that on a weekend night you daren't so much as look at somebody for fear of causing offence (and a fight). In other words the town is pretty lawless after dark. This is inexcusable for a douce wee town like Stornoway.

I think the police need to look to their laurels after this kind of incident. Less cups of tea in the crew room and more pounding the beat chatting to the public.

Lawless? Ach go back to reading the scary mail! SY is a pretty safe town, i'd wager theres not many nights out as safe as it, where you can walk down backstreets or through wooded areas without fear of assault or worse, no matter age or gender. The majority of scraps are usually over some mundane half thought through argument over a blone or who's astra is faster or what football team is the business.

Rarely does a totally innocent party get set upon like in other towns and cities.

There are plenty cops on patrol at the weekends, but come on think about it its going to be pretty hard to catch a group of half cut neds battering artwork in a secluded spot. Its a shite thing to do and a shame, but its in the nature of some to smash things up, always has always will, doesn't matter where you go.

Public art has always been an easy target, its a disgrace these statues got smashed up but surely folk whos job it is to commission public art should have realised by now that unless its made out of extremely durable materials (or electrified or fitted with a machine gun nest) it is ultimately pointless and a waste of public money. Harsh but true!

Only way to deal with this is to replace asap and dont give in, as to Stornoway being a safe place at a weekend thats rubbish, the standard of whats deemed to be acceptable behavior is pretty low,it wouldnt be allowed elsewhere, saturday night violence is still seen as an acceptable risk

The steps leading to the CO-OP from the Tradeing Post are to be avoided from 6pm. onwards.
A group who congregate there can be very offencive and threatening.
The last time I used them I was called a phedo and another name that I wont repeat because I refused to buy them alcohol from the CO-OP.

These twats know they can do this and nothing will happen to them.

If they release a mass murderer from jail, then Kenny Macaskill will not allow them to jail a bunch of vandals.

No mention is made of the application which was made for funding for the renewal / upgrade of the town cctv system. A submission was made, supported by the police, to have the existing coverage upgraded and extended out to the roundabout past the CO-OP,

Step forward those intrepid stalwarts in the council that vetoed the application.

No excuse for it. Criminal offence - should result in punishment if/when caught.

Wake up, things are not so different here to the mainland. I know plenty similar sized towns on the mainland where it is relatively safe (probably safer than SY)to walk around. Alcohol fuels most of this kind of behaviour and SY and the Islands have a greater alcohol problem than most of the mainland outside the cities - unfortunately not enough people here acknowledge the fact.

Motorbikes driven by Morons speeding up Willowglen Road, Matheson Road, and Macaulay road last Sunday early afternoon, illuminated traffic island signs, as usual, pushed over by Morons at the weekend, and where are the police we pay, no doubt sat on their fat arses in the tea room at the police station.

Letter to Gazette said...

I saw this letter in the Gazette 16/9/2010- I have reproduced it in full without comment, omitting only the full postal address of the writer since most posters on this blog are anonymous.

I have just returned from an eight day holiday visit to Lewis and I would like to make some general comments on the trip. First of all, I found those local Lewis people I came in contact with open and welcoming and there was no hint of the anti-English sentiment I was warned about by my fellow-countrymen before I came.
I was surprised by the substantial number of English accents I came across in the island which suggests to me that the stories of anti-English bias were largely exaggerated.
Secondly, I was disappointed by the extensive littering of the streets in Stornoway and more importantly in the vicinity of some of your beautiful beaches and in the Castle Grounds, surely one of the best municipal parks in the UK. This suggests to me that the islanders do not care very much for their environment and sadly neither does the local authority council.
I expected Stornoway to be as beautiful as the song suggests but sadly I found it to be a rather grubby and unkempt place and the town centre resembled a building site.
Surely the Western Isles Council can do better than this!
Thirdly, are there any Police in Stornoway? In all my eight days, I never once laid eyes on a policeman/woman on the beat in the town. Yes, they have a swanky new HQ but all the Bobbies must be cloistered inside and are leaving the streets to the citizen.
This probably explains the total disregard by Lewis people of parking laws and the Highway Code. Double yellow lines are habitually parked on in the town.
I even saw cars parked on double yellow lines directly across the road from the Church Street Police HQ. Parking at road junctions in direct violation of the Highway Code is common place and the police just ignore it.
I mentioned this situation to a fellow-traveller, an islander, on the 'Isle of Lewis' on my return journey and his contention was that the Police are not held in very high regard locally.
Will I go back to Lewis? Yes despite the reservations I mention above because Lewis still remains a largely unspoiled and beautiful place. If you could only do something about the weather.
