Councillors 'should get pay rise'

Leaders to get at least £44,000 and Councillors to get £18,000 a year, a Government report recommends.

"Anyone got any thoughts on this matter?", he asks in a highly inflammatory way.

I'm of the view it is far too much for Councillors here, and way, way too much for the Leader.

Perhaps if there were 1/3 fewer Councillors it would make sense, but the Committee seem happy to spend our money willy-nilly.

I think Councillors should get more than that. That way, it will attract a greater calibre of candidate. Certainly reduce the numbers but get more capable ones in.

Much better to employ more people who have less to do, perhaps do it better under less stress.
Most people are paid too much these days

Angus, is this an early 'poisson d'Avril'?

How about no pay at all...like it use to be in the good old days. At least then when councillors are old and knackered they will stand down, and not suddenly re-appear like Cliff Richard.

'Much better to employ more people with less to do...' they have been doing that at the council for years without any visible signs of improvement. I'm off to take my medication.

Bit rich coming from an accountant.
A similarity of having to have a bank account if you want wages.
You must pay the reaper to get any releif so you need someone to fiddle the system in your favour you need a shylock.
But do agree 22 councilors on £30K fulltime would get career councillors not retired teachers.

Perhaps the Comhairle councillors, and particularly the leader, could decline that extra money and instead suggest that the money be used to offset the many gaffes and errors of judgement they have made over the years (and particularly over recent times) which have resulted in public monies being used inappropriately.

I think M P s are from another planet who in there right mind would give councilors more money they don't deserve what they get never mind a pay rise I would like a smart journilist to print a page in the Storoway paper what the councillor's do in a week, well not a page half a page would be sufficent one line for each one would cover it

If 8.24 really wants to get some profound message across to us avid readers, could he please give us the benefit of a wee bit of punctuation here and there? The spelling and redundant apostrophes we can forgive, but it's a bit much having to read through it three times to see where the sentences are supposed to begin and end.
And can 7.15 give a glass or two of what he's on to the rest of us?

8:24PM Have you been smoking a bit of "waccy baccy" from your Ness contact during playtime at the Nicolson, before jumping on this blog again?

Presumably any salary for councillors comes with a gold-plated final salary pension? (As for MP's, MSP's, MEP's). A wee boost for the present co-hort before the next elections in 2012. I thought we were bankrupt as a nation? Not only economically, it would appear!
How does this square with the local and national deficit and efforts to identify savings? Are we already seeing the green shoots of recovery and moving once again from BUST to BOOM? I think we're getting mixed messages.

Maybe they could take out a half page and add what our MP and MSP do for us over the last 4 years. That would leave a lot of space for advertising....

it's a diversion to keep you occupied while the real big earners increases sails through. You will only know what the MSP have got after you have elected another Party yes man.

Some W.I. councillors are earning from other jobs they're holding down as well as their council duties. This is not right, especially considering how much they're paid (not to mention the perks), and it should be made a condition of employment as a councillor that they do that job and that job only. Less nepotism would be good too.

when every other worker in our islands is struggling why should our under worked elected reps. think a pay rise is in order.
We've no money, or that's what my councillor keeps telling us. Take the hit like the rest of us, maybe they need to go on to piece work, then we'll see who really does the work.

Seems like just another slap in the face for the lowly council workers who have had a pay freeze for three years, or those who have lost jobs because of job restructuring.
How can they really justify a pay rise of so much for the Leader of the council.

I'm not a councillor and I hope I never will get that rush of blood to the head that tells me to stand for election.

But we have to work something out here. If we take away the money they are paid, it will be the same as it ever was - just useless old coves who could afford to stand because they have nice gold-plated pensions and have nothing to do.

If you want lively folk with varied opinions and some experience of business, then you're going to have to pay them or why should they bother doing it?

I think we need about a dozen of them at most. Pay them the same as someone gets who goes on the Health Board (about £9k a year) plus their bus fare (or ferry fare for the Southern Isles). Give the leader £25k a year because it's more or less a full-time job. No pension, like now.

Then tell them they can only stand three times.

Problem solved. Next!
