Facing both ways

The difficulty with facing both ways, or of trying to please all the people all the time, is that sooner or later you end up upsetting all sides by your prevarication and indecision.

So it is with the SNP policy on Gay Marriage, which seems to have got them into a real pickle about what they actually believe in and stand for.

Indeed, they have made a row out of what should have been an easy policy to take forward, creating deep division and disagreement where little or no apparent disagreement existed.

How are they going to get themselves out of this hole?

The idea that they could be handed the Catholic vote and promote a policy of supporting Gay Marriage was all about getting votes and winning an election rather than having a coherent strategy (other than the winning, of course).

The test will be how this vast gap is bridged.  The best course of action will be to take a firm view and drive it forward; but the civil service advice will be to try to kick it into the long grass, by having a consultation and a review and a commission.  That course will satisfy no-one and will only prolongue the debate, which is already getting very bitter.

Bizarrely, this looks like being the issue that will cause the most damage to the SNP - not least when our MP and MSP are pressed to give their views not the matter.

The SNP only care about big business in order to raise revenue for independence. Similarly they will do anything to chase votes. Commitment to the cause at least.

There's another blog meister vehemently supporting the right of a guy to stick his jalopy into another guy's car pool. Is that a natural thing to do?

I'm told Maroot is now lobbying Allan to oppose Gay Marriage.

Has the penny not dropped?

It is not the SNP who will decide if this policy goes forward but Brian Souter there was talk in the hall of Holyrood that further donations might rely on it being lost in the economic problems....

MacNeil strongly against gay marriage

Allan strongly for gay marriage

Each has their own reasons, but why are they keeping so quite on something they believe in so strongly?

Is this a matter reserved by the corrupt bstds in Westminster to adjudicate?

If you remember Mr Allen actually said "Civil Partnerships and marriage should be kept separate" so he sat on the fence really.
Angus MacNeil is too busy searching for all the lost property round Westminster and Whitehall:

Poetic justice if a rich gay couple bought the Barra hotel and invited all their freinds to stay.

Do we not have bigger things to worry about? Most people have moved on. Can people stop walking about the world looking for insults to walk into.

"Poetic justice if a rich gay couple...etc"

No wonder you haven't the moral resolve to publish your name. It would give folk the chance to laugh in your face!

Now that i think of it, if a gay couple buying a hotel here kept the likes of you from coming, I think they would made be very welcome.

Here in America, it's often a case that those who pass anti-gay legislation don't exactly practice what the preach...

(Nice title of this post, btw :)
