The truths they don't want you to read....

Decide my future

In the spirit of openness, lunacy and sheer bravado, I've launched my own on-line poll. It's not quite up there with the No 10 Petitions website, and like Tony Blair, I reserve the right to ignore the outcome, unless it suits me.

My pitch: I'm open, available and not scared to voice an opinion. Do you want to be represented by the bland or those who are able and willing to be outspoken? You may not agree with what I say, but at least you know where I stand.

Should I .........
Stand again as a Councillor?
Stand for Convener?
Stand as an independent MSP?
Stand in a corner?
Stand on my head?
Stand down?
See Results
The results may not reflect public opinion. They may not even reflect the opinion of those who decide to vote. Multiple voting is expected and gives me the freedom to ignore the outcome. May contain nuts. Small parts are not suitable for children under 60. Suitable for vegans, venusians and vietnamese.

Go for MSP Angus. You have a massive cross party following, across all the Islands and you would walk it.
We need a change but that certainly isn't the spiky haired SNP incomer who has only lived here a few months, knows nothing about anything up here and who will leave like a shot if he isn't elected.
I still can't believe that with the supposed large local SNP following, they couldn't find a single local person to stand as an MSP candidate. That in itself is an insult to the Western Isles people.

I'd vote for you as an independent MSP. It's impressive in this day and age to find a politician who answers the questions asked of him rather than the ones he would have liked to have been asked! Would it continue were you elected to Holyrood though?

Also, wouldn't you be worried about splitting the SNP vote, thus handing the seat to Mr A Morrison again?

Alasdair,

The blog will continue regardless of where I am. I promise to be open, mischievous and provocative irrespective.... I have nothing to lose but my self-respect :-)

Anon,

Thanks for the supportive words

I agree with Alasdair that Angus is the most open politician in the Western Isles who doesn't change his opinion to suit the circumstance. I don't think that you would split the SNP vote as the ballot box is a private place and I think the SNP voters would breathe a sigh of relief that they actually had a candidate who has lived in the islands most of his life and understands the way of life.

Machaseo, I have never voted for Labour, new or old BUT I am a realist. The only reason that AA stands a (slim) chance of getting in is that he is not Alastair Morrison. Are you naive enough to think that the Labour camp won't play on the fact that he hasn't even lived here a year yet? It even took him months from receiving the nomination to move here. He has walked into a job (well paid from what I hear) that wasn't even advertised within the local community. What does that say about how the SNP feel about the Western Isles? They are in it for themselves, the SNP glory but certainly not for the Islands.

Oh dear Machaseo, are you suggesting that some members of the "United" Western Isles SNP organisation would actually consider voting for someone else who dares to disagree with Messrs MacNeil and Allan? To the point that Mr. Allan may not get elected? Surely Not!!! And there was little me thinking it was in the bag.

MacHaseo - Allan stood in Gordon last time. Salmond want to stand there. Ask MacNeil to arrange to selection of placemen as thanks for Allan standing aside.

MacNeil actively campaigns for Allan (his ex flatmate?) in breach of party rules, but that's OK as party want their man in place.

Angus sees it coming and stands aside - not good for democracy, but maybe clever for him.

Allan wins by fewer than 20 votes over Calum Smith, which tells you how much he is liked locally.

Machaseo, your comment is exactly the reason why the SNP / Alistair Allan will not get in. You are one of the FEW Lewis SNP supporters who have got their heads stuck so far up their own selves that they cannot see reality. I am an SNP supporter but I will not be voting for Alistair Allan for all the reasons stated above and because of his tance on Windfarms. He hasn't even got an alternative to economic redevelopment of the Islands he has just allowed himself to be wooed by MWT and the anti windfarm campaign, the majority of which aren't even registered voters up here. Try talking to local people who have to earn a living up here in the Islands and you will get a very different picture. I have also had many conversations with people inside and outside the party who were devastated when Angus stood aside and would give their time and energies to his campaign were he to run.
You have been warned.

Nepotism, New Labour activist, egotistical and dodgy polls.
Wow you are clutching at every straw in this one aren't you Machaseo??!!
You fail to mention that you work (present tense) here. Are you lucky enough to have got your pension and want to spend your retirement looking at a baron wasteland whilst all the youngsters move away to make their fortune, only returning to be put out to pasture.
You also fail to mention the other proposed and approved wind farm developments on the Islands BUT I guess they're okay as they aren't in your back yard.
Hmmmm

Machaseo

A review of the hosting domains of readers of the blog is quiet illuminating. Whilst I don't know the anon to whom you refer (but I suspect I may know) I can see roughly where some of the hits are coming from.

I advise that everyone should read the postings with a degree of scepticism. I suspect that some posters may be trying to make me go down a certain route for the wrong reasons. Wrong for me that is: politics is a dirty business. :-)

If anyone thinks I'll be swayed one way or another by flattery or insults (or multiple voting) then think again. Reasoned argument is another thing altogether .....

Machaseo: with a little computer knowledge, I've discovered that it is possible to vote multiple times in the same browser.

Is the poll scientific? Not in the slightest. It's flawed from start to finish, and the last thing I'm going to do is base my decisions upon it. It has, however, stirred debate, which was its intent.
