The American way....

A blog posting from the roving Berneray librarian - who is currently in the US of A covering the Presidential elections for Am Paipear - throws up an interesting suggestion....

Why not have referenda aka propositions, to determine spending priorities? Will you vote for Gaelic education or street lights?

Apart from the obvious "Do you want to remove X as a Councillor?", do readers have any suggestions about what other voting choices should we have?

Eh-oop Angus; we already have the chance to remove councillor X. Its called local elections. Sadly Councillor X is usually someone's cousin/uncle/granny/prize winning ewe. Common sense will never prevail on an island where nepotism and cronie-ism are two of the four horsemen. Perhaps your readers would like to suggest and possibly vote for the other two horsemen.

In the meantime how about a vote to bring back the mediaeval custom of putting people in stocks and pelting them with rotting fruit and vegetables...which can be supplied at full price by our two first rate supermarkets. We could then vote for a selection of people to be put into said stocks.

Hello from Montana. Which is not that dissimilar to the OH (e.g. everyone has a van/pickup truck with a dog in it), except that the food portions are much bigger and the price of "gas" is absurdly cheap (locals in bar last night did not believe how much it costs in the OH).

Actually not covering this for AP, though I may do them a piece. The very local election adverts on TV here have to be seen to be believed, with councillors pointing out the inconsistencies in each others voting records. Heck, they'd have fun with that in the Hebrides if this model was copied.
