The religious divide

The difference between different world religions is often not as wide as some people make out.

Sometimes they are all ploughing the same insane furrow.

In Iran, the Iranian former chief nuclear negotiator is complaining the the President is encouraging an expectation amongst Shia Muslims that the "Missing Imman" will reappear any moment after 1000 years hiding.

According to Ultra-Othrodox Jews in Israel, tolerance of gays causes earthquakes.

I see the ga"zero"tte are dismissing rumours of a Sunday ferry on the 23rd, wonder where that started?? BUT the way the headline is reported "laughable" I think someones got there back up!

And in Lewis some folk believe that the universe was created by an invisible being in six days...Not only that but they gather together in special buildings that they don't use for any other purpose to talk to this invisible being, and even though they haven't heard sight nor sound from him / her for quite a long time, they still carry on doing it! And while they're doing this they expect those who don't share their curious delusions to ...well do nothing, really.

They're not very keen on gay people either...

There parallels to be drawn with what is happening here. Our so-called leaders believe that building a massive windfarm will miraculously stop people from leaving the island and that the wealth! generated will transform the islands into paradise on earth.

The parallel to be drawn is the blind faith shown by Captain Swing and his bog obsessed ilk, for some tourist miracle that will prevent the islands decline into a ridiculed and backward looking den of beggars.

Speaking as a Christian - I hear from God (almost) every day. I also don't expect syskeptic to do nothing - I expect him to give his life to Jesus and be saved like all you other skeptics out there!

Anon 12:53

And speaking as a Christian (non Calvanist)I make no demands on any others to compel them to conform to my faith - just learned advise and by setting an example quietly in my own life.

It is the Bigoted Blind faith of the varied squabling Free Churchs on lewis that is driving the young away from our islands as much as any other factor.

Anonymous (12.53 PM) expects me and other skeptics to give our lives to Jesus, whose dad apparently speaks to him most days. Now I don't want to seem churlish about this, but why on earth would I take my moral guidance from a long-dead Jewish preacher whose basic principles (in so far as you can make them out from the bible) are a hotch-potch of the common-sensical (love thy neighbour), the non-sensical (love thy enemy)and and the downright perverse (abandon your family & follow me!). Let's be quite clear about this - only someone who has been inculcated with this stuff from an early age is going to unquesioningly believe it. I invite anonymous to reflect on the fact that if he had happened to have been born & brought up in Iraq rather than Scotland he would almost certainly have become a Moslem, and based his moral views on another delusional belief system which has no basis in reality.

speaking again (cf 12.53) as a christian (not quite sure of your definition of a calvanist - or indeed Christian - is) I want people saved - if i were you 2:17pm i would be asking myself, hold on a bit - what exactly do i mean by believing in Christ? Surely if you believe that the Barvas road is dangerous and you see your Mum or Dad driving up in that direction you don't say to yourself... oh well its okay they believe its safe!!!
