Incandescent light bulbs

I read that Australia are set to ban incandescent light bulbs from 2009.

This seems an eminently sensible step towards energy reduction, and although I have tried to replace every one in the house, I still find that I have to use ordinary bulbs in some places where the fluorescent bulbs just won't fit.

However, the biggest power users in the Western Isles are likely to be the Comhairle and the Health Board, and I'm not sure that either have taken any steps in progressing this simple way to be greener.

I'm going to request a report be brought back to Environmental Services in March to ensure that all new bulbs are the fluorescent type, and that the Comhairle encourage the Health Board to follow our lead.

HELLO, Are you standing for re-election? Or are you taking the money? To pay for all the costly bulbs.

I went to the Co-op this morning to buy a buld, there was a choice, the energy saving/longer lasting bulb was £6.49, and the other bulb was priced at 69p for two bulbs. Which bulb do you think I should have bought? Keep on keeping on Tws.....

The whole point it that the bulbs are expensive because the volume isn't there. By banning incandescent bulbs, the price of fluorescent bulbs will come down as volumes increase.

This is a virtuous circle, and whilst it might cost a little more, at least we will be reducing energy usage.

The alternative is doing nothing and hoping someone else takes the lead.

Reduce the price of the bulbs and the volume of sales will increase.

Don't be put off by the lack of choice in local shops, there are specialist online retailers with all different shapes, sizes and colours available.
