The truths they don't want you to read....
I made my first visit to the new Tesco in Stornoway today.
First impressions:
- It was quiet in the store at 11am on a Saturday
- The shelves are very tall and stocked right to the top
- The aisles are very narrow
- The layout is very clean
- The variety is huge
Second impressions:
- Check-outs are very fast
- Lots of really good prices
- But the overall cost was very similar to the prices in the Co-op
Overall, you can see why they make so much money, with the shelves being constantly restocked in a highly efficient manner and with excellent customer service. The share price reflects their skills and abilities, and it will be interesting to see how long the extensive variety continues, and more importantly what happens after they expand the store.
Will definitely go again.

They're here, whether (some) people like it or not. Job done. Next letter-writing campaign: get an Ikea here.
I'm waiting for the Sunday opening. About time we got more Sunday services up here.
I think the apparent variety is misleading - it feels very much Tesco Lite to me... yes, space, I know. Still, it's a very conservative selection. What's the most exotic thing anyone's come out with? I got pinenuts.
I left the other day thinking, this actually feels a bit like the modern world. I don't feel that very often in Lewis.
It (Tesco's) is good but not as good as it could be. The limiting factor is the size of the site available. Now if they bought the flooring retailer and the building that the dry-cleaner's is in; knocked them doen then, we could get a decent sized Tesco's.
The Checkouts are very fast and efficient. It's not an unpleasant experience shopping there.
BTW Co-op every day water ?31p per 2L bottle (it was the last time I bought it). Tesco's Value Water 17p per 2L bottle.
As for Sunday opening? Bring it on! {:-)
Isn't it nice to have the choice as to where to do your supermarket shop again?
Pity they have not got an ethical policy like the Co-op

Is it ethical to raise your prices when your nearest competitor closes down, then reduce them back down again just before a new competitor comes in, then blame the up-and-down on other factors?
And is it ethical to take nearly out of date stock from one brach, and move it into a smaller branch which has no significant competitors for 30 miles, leaving people with the choice of that, or nothing?

The Co-op are so ethical that they are under investigation, together with several other retailers, by the OFT for fixing the price of cancer sticks.
They are not ethical. They are in business to make money the same as any other retailer. The beliefs and core values of the original
co-op have long gone.
yes, the co-op's original (christian) values have gone But i would still rather buy from them than from a multinational that does not respect nations - Tesco's have a poor record in the third world... THEY will not be rejoicing that Tesco's is still in business. 6:20 we already have sunday services up here... and a wide variety
I don't think that's quite the service he had in mind.
