Goodbye Gordon Brown?
MacDougall was MP for Glenrothes, and any result is going to be read as the public view on the neighbouring MP, our Glorious Leader, Gordon Brown.
The election will be delayed and delayed, simply to make sure that the Labour Party machine is working before any election is called.
And to find some mug to take the poison chalice that is the nomination.
The last results were:
Party | Votes | Share |
Labour | 19,395 | 51.9% |
SNP | 8,731 | 23.4% |
Giving a majority of 10,664, which on current trends makes it a marginal seat.

I don't think today is the day to speculate about the by-election.
Show some respect for an MP who was one of the old school and a gentleman.
It is sad that this man has died at the young age of 60 but he was a public servant and his death means that there will be a by election. Gordon Brown is also one of the old school and some (even me) consider that he is a gentleman. However politics (and the running of the country) go on so I will now speculate.
An early by election might help Labour with people remembering that John MacDougall was a gentleman, a good MP and leader of Fife council whose life was sadly cut short. However the need to organise activists and funds may necessitate a later by election. What chance that we end up with a double by election with Jack taking his leave of Holyrood at the same time?
besides just because that was a maginal the last time it was contested, doesn't make it one now.
