Hansard

As well as being a good source for determining what an MP did - or did not - actually say during a debate, sometimes the official record shines a light on other matters.

Consider this exchange on the budget debate:-

Mr. MacNeil rose—

Mr. Meacher: The hon. Gentleman came into the Chamber in the middle of the debate, and he keeps popping up, presumably to assure Hansard of his presence. I will give way to him, but perhaps he should have come in earlier and made his own contribution instead of 10 interruptions.

What exactly are you trying to say with this? You can't be so naive as to not realise that this is a political put-down as anybody from any party other than the Government would recieve.

Oh yes he can be.

Maybes it showS that Macneil had an itchy bum and kept standing up to scatch it?
If he a "runny tummy" too that would also explain why he was late getting to the debate! {:-)

At least he was there!

I once heard of an MP who spent over 25 years in Parliament and only ever asked one question.

His question 'Can we have the window open as it's got a bit hot in here' this was during the 1976 heatwave.

Anyone who as ever been involved in politics knows that MP's don't spend their entire time in the chamer. Otherwise they would never get any work done!

Being paid £250,000 a year, it isn't unreasonable to expect MacNeil to actually attend the most important debate of the year, and one he has been repeatedly telling us via the Gazette that he was going to move amendments on.

Perhaps if he stands for relection he will clearly set out the basis on which he will or will not attend important debates.

Being paid £250,000 a year

Are you sure?

MP's get paid £60,000 a year, not £250,000!

The current salary for an MP is £61,820.

Angus MacNeil claimed expenses (including staff costs) of £169,971 for 2006/07.

The total cost of his position was therefore £231,791.

Yes, but he wasn't paid £231,791.

He was paid £61,820 and recieved £169,791 for his office-costs, staff, travel, etc, none of which actually went into his pocket.

I wonder how much creative accounting put in his pocket. Bet he didn't pay a penny at 40% tax rate. Just a moan moment it will pass.

“Mr MacNeil rose”. His record shows that he has never had difficulty getting up. His problem is about timing, location and the appropriateness of the getting up. At least he spared them, during the Budget Debate, about himself, his father and a dynamo – which clearly feels is a tale for all occasions. (See previous blog on the sh*te he dribbled form the An Lanntair stage). His pals in MWT will be delighted with him though.

Re Angus's 10:00 PM post

Thanks for pointing out this thought provoking resource. For an MP, with modern, pretty boy, environmentally aware credentials that is one heck of an air fare bill.

Perhaps the SNP would provide us with details of all their MP and MSP carbon footprints...........

These comments about MacNeil supposedly lining his pockets with MP's expenses are laughably. I don't agree with his politics but I will credit him with some intelligence. He will know that he can sh*g whoever he likes (hundreds of MP have been caught up to know good with those other than their Mrs) he can even get away with punching a member of the public (remember John Prescott) but the one thing that you can't do is fiddle your expenses, look what happened to Derek Conway (another Tory who thought he was above the law)

So just ask yourself if you were on £60,000 a year and all that free travel and other perks would you want to risk getting caught fiddling the books? I think not.

So you're not referring to Alex Salmond then?

And we are all feeling the benefit of our overworked MP aren't we?

So how much of the £86,299 did Rhona get?
Now I know how she can afford a brand new Mini Cooper. Not a bad salary for a job that was never even advertised in the Western Isles although I heard that Rhona had some specialist skills that very few in the Islands have!
I also heard that long distance running was added to the skills that were nice to have but not essential.

All MPs expenses from 2004 will be published shortly, so we should all be able to make an informed judgement on the claims.

angus 10:00 why can't i get beyond p. 14 without getting a default message when i try that site

Some of your readers might like to know that our MP was arguing against the closure of local post offices in Parliament today.

Out of the £86,299 it may interest you to know that Angus MacNeil paid three full-time salaries, which is not an unreasonable amount of money. He would also have been responsible for paying part of the salary for a member of the SNP Westminster staff. Hardly higher than average wages.

I think it is awful all the innuendo that is spread on here about the MP and the wee blonde nymph.

I get Kenny MacLeod full-time; Alasdair Allan from July 2006; Rhona Martin until July 2006; Anne Harvey (London) full-time; and a fifth of a researcher. That makes 3.2 salaries, but with more paid in London than in Lewis.
