David Davis

Thanks to the Telegraph, and a comment on this blog:

Angus MacNeil's support for David Davis

Labour MPs Bob Marshall-Andrews and Ian Gibson have already risked expulsion from their own party by voicing their support for David Davis at the forthcoming by-election in Haltemprice and Howden.

And now I can reveal that another erstwhile political opponent of Davis is coming out to back the former shadow home secretary in his test of public opinion on 42-day detention.

Angus MacNeil — the Scottish Nationalist MP whose complaint prompted the cash-for-honours enquiry — tells me that he would be delighted to offer Davis a helping hand in the contest, which is expected to take place on July 10.

“As a Scottish Nationalist I try to avoid English politics, but I’d go and campaign for David Davis if he wanted me to,” says MacNeil. “I admire his principles and from what I know of him, he is a straightforward and honest man. Gordon Brown’s argument for 42-day detention is all about keeping him in Downing Street for another two years: no wonder he’s bottling the fight with David Davis.”

Nice to see politicians standing up for their principles even when crossing party boundaries.
Thanks for highlighting the positive stance taken by MacNeil on this issue, Angus.

AB supporting terrorists. No surprise there – only last week he was saying that he’d read the Koran if it were translated into Gaelic. Now he’s away to the latest party in politics(where the media circus is in attendance) – a stunt by a Tory grandee who’s fallen out with his boss. Angus remind me – what does the Koran say about martyrs and virgins in Paradise? And does their Holy Book say anything about the need for a Piper whilst drilling on off shore islands…? And is it a jackets on or off situation. Look forward to the next Sy communions when the Great Elder from our Parish invites the MP to read from the Koran in Gaidhlig:

David Davis I assume knows what is happening to civil liberties "soon to be human rights" in this country of ours that he has made a rare and courageous stand. Now it is our turn to make at least a token stand and get to the bottom of who is using the state "war on terror" powers in our small community to act like a perverted peeping tom with all the mod cons. Maybe we can ask our elected officials, well I have second thoughts about that, you see that word "TRUST" means something different from the way you or I understand it to be. AMEN

Anon 10.29 PM. Perhaps AB should read the Holy Bible, and learn the 10 comandments before he moves on to the Koran.

anon 10:29, you are absolutely hilarious, but not in the way you think.

All together now to bring down NuLabour...

So MacNeil also supports Davis' intolerant views on immigration, the death penalty, gays and his anti-EU stance.

Or maybe he was just talking out of his ar$e, desperately looking for a cheap headline.

Isn't supporting another political party against the rules of the SNP (and most other parties).

Shouldn't he be disciplined for this, as you can see all the Tartan Tory jibes being flung around.

Maybe he just wants to take on one election that he might have a chance of winning!

As a lifelong SNP voter, I am none too pleased. One of the few things that the Prime Minister has got right was his analysis of David Davis’s bye-elction prank. He called it a “stunt that’s now descended into farce.” I hope my MP doesn’t spend too much time with him – in fact I hope he spends no time with him. There are major issues to be addressed and Angus should focus on them. And I don’t like the tone of the anti-islamic contribution above. I’m proud that my MP is supporting members of the Islamic community and showing a willingness to stand up for what’s right – and I also believe that there are many things in the Koran we could do well to embrace in our own culture and Churches. Although I cant speak the Gaelic I would try and learn if the Koran was translated into Gaelic. (Alba gu brach and soarsa are my favourite expressions)

could anon 10:29 please explain why a christian shouldn't read the Koran? I can find lots in the Bible encouraging me to keep reading - could he tell me the piece (i must've missed it) where it says do not read the books of other religions?

Why don't you run a poll on the 42 day detention Angus. Then we can judge what the local feeling on the issue is.

Rather than the pathetic suggestion that ABM suggests terrorists, or the hilarious use of the key works "jacket", "piper" and "drilling", perhaps readers might like to consider the following questions:

- do they understand the proposals regarding detention without charge? As I understand it, our laws are already a lot more severe than most EU countries, but feel free to correct me if this in wrong.
- do they support the proposals?
- do they think David Davis was wrong to resign as a matter of principle?
- do they think that ABM is right to put party politics to one side and offer support to David Davis?

I think that some issues rise above party politics, and IMO this is one of these issues.

Am I bovered?

Heard D J Macsween on RNG this morning making a very valid point regarding ABM. If ABM feels as strong as David Davis on the 42 day detention issue why does he not stand down and force a bi-election. I think ABM is running scarred after another one of his pranks.
